Staffordshire Terrier Care
What to do to avoid fleas and ticks.
For external parasites: fleas and ticks, we recommend regularly treating your pet with Simparica. These are meat flavored chewable tablets. The effect of one tablet is calculated for 28 days. Tablets are selected according to the weight of the dog.
Particular attention should be paid to the processing of Stafford during the period: spring-summer-autumn, when the air temperature is above +5 ° C. During this period, ticks begin to actively multiply, which can infect the dog with the terrible disease piroplasmosis (another name for babesiosis).
You can also use the complex drug Simparica TRIO and your Staffordshire Terrier will receive protection from ticks, fleas and helminths at the same time.
In addition to Simpariki, you can also use other drugs: Fronline (Frontline) - spray or drops at the withers, Nexgard (Neksgard), Bravecto (Bravecto). Each drug has its own scheme of application - carefully read the instructions.
For the prevention of worms.
For the prevention of helminth infections with a frequency of 1 time in 3 months, we recommend using the drug Drontal (Drontal) at the rate of 1 tablet per 10 kg of dog weight. These are broad spectrum meat flavored chewable tablets. If you are feeding your dog natural meat and not dry food, it is recommended to give Drontal once a month.
How to care for Amstaff coat.
Hair care is minimal. The Staffordshire Terrier usually sheds twice a year - in spring and autumn. The issue of molting is solved by combing the wool during a walk with an ordinary rubber glove or brush. Bathe the dog as it gets dirty. For puppies use puppy shampoo.
You can do something nice for yourself and the dog and take it to the grooming salon for the “express shedding” procedure. They buy it, comb out the hairs, enhance the color with a special shampoo. Visiting the salon is always a pleasant pastime.
Ear care.
Check your pet's ears regularly. If necessary, clean the ears with a cotton swab. Normally, the inner side of the ear is clean, with a small amount of light sulfur. If you notice dark discharge, an unpleasant smell, redness, or the dog shakes its head, touches its ear with its paw, this indicates problems and you need to consult a veterinarian.
The grooming salon can also clean your pet's ears.
Eye care.
In normal condition, your Staffordshire Terrier's eyes should be clear, clean and without any discharge. Dangerous symptoms: redness of the eyes, inflammation around the eyes, mucous or watery discharge from the eyes, frequent blinking, increased lacrimation. A consultation with a veterinarian is required.
How to take care of your teeth.
If the amstaff eats dry food, then to some extent it helps to clean the teeth. Special nylon bones also help to clean the teeth. They do not have abrasive properties, and as they “work” they are covered with a fringe of fibers, which improves cleaning of the teeth. You can use special bones with fluoride for brushing your teeth or green bones with chlorophyll. If you observe red swollen gums, discolored teeth, putrid breath in your amstaff, you should consult a veterinarian.
Periodically, you can brush your teeth with a special gel.
Nail care.
Healthy nails should be shiny, not crumble or exfoliate. If the amstaff lives in the city, then walking on a hard surface, the claws grind off by themselves. If not, then it is necessary to trim the tips of the claws (claw cutter like a secateurs). You can do it yourself or go to a veterinary clinic or grooming salon.
